HOMEOPATHY

HISTORY

Homeopathy is based on the principle that ‘like cures like’ – in other words, a substance taken in small amounts will cure the same symptoms it causes if it was taken in large amounts.      This idea dates back to Hippocrates (460-377BC), who also thought that symptoms specific to an individual should be taken into account before making a diagnosis. This is also an important principle of homeopathy, where an individual’s unique symptoms are important in distinguishing the correct medicine.

The idea of like curing like was not to re-emerge in any great way until a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) came to devise the system of medicine that we know as homeopathy. Hahnemann trained in medicine and chemistry. Working as a doctor in the late 18th century, he was dissatisfied with the conventional medical practices of his day. Blood-letting, purging and giving patients large doses of toxic materials such as arsenic and lead were commonplace. Hahnemann disagreed with these harsh methods. He was investigating the effects of various medicinal substances on himself and other healthy volunteers when he deduced that an illness could be treated with a very small amount of a substance that, in larger quantities, could cause that illness. To avoid harmful effects from normal doses of the substances he diluted each medicine until he reached the greatest dilution that would still produce a response. These experiments were called provings and led him to observe and describe the basic principles of homeopathic medicine.

The Highest ideal of cure is rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health; that is, The lifting and annihilation of disease in it’s entire extent in the shortest, most reliable and least disadvantageous way, according to clearly realizable (in-seeable) principles.

WHO CAN BE A PATIENT

Homeopathy is ideal for all stages of life and for a wide range of conditions. It is gentle, effective, and safe for everyone including infants, children, pregnant mothers, and even animals. The medicinal remedies won't interfere with any medications you are taking; they work with your specific immune system to restore it back to balance and strength. Homeopathy treats your whole system, not just specific symptoms, which allows everyone to benefit from its healing capabilities.

LifeStyle and Diet

A healthy diet, regular exercise, enough sleep and relaxation are all part of being healthy. Sometimes old habits are difficult to break however, many of my patients remark that after homeopathic treatment they are much healthier both physically and emotionally;  healthy choices is easier to make and  in a way that feels natural and effortless.

ABOUT THE TREATMENT

The remedy prescribed will be in pill form, which should be allowed to dissolve under the tongue or in a water potency. Nothing else should be put in the mouth for 15 minutes before and after taking the remedy.

You may be advised to avoid during your treatment.

  • coffee
  • peppermint and other
  • sharp smelling substances

It is possible that for a very short time, your symptoms may appear slightly worse. This is called a homeopathic aggravation and means the remedy is taking effect and you should feel the beginnings of recovery when this period has passed. Alternatively, patients often experience a period of well being and optimism.

If you develop any new symptoms during treatment, and have any questions, please feel free to contact me. It is important to keep careful track of any changes, that way we can discuss it at your next appointment.

How long is a course of treatment?

This depends on a number of factors:

  • What type of illness you are suffering from
  • How long you have had the illness
  • Your age and overall health
  • Your sensitivity

The longer you wait before seeking treatment, the longer it takes to treat. When your body starts to show signs of imbalance or disease, don't hesitate, get help right away.

For acute (short-term) ailments, treatment can be very rapid.

Long standing complaints take time to treat. Homeopathy cures from the inside, and often outer symptoms such as a skin complaint, are the last to clear. Be patient! In the long term it is much better to address the underlying imbalance than merely relieving or suppressing the symptoms.

Every case is different, just as no two people are alike.
